Dear Colleagues and Friends,
On behalf of the local organizing committee for this "First Joint Scandinavian Conference in Cardiothoracic Surgery" you are cordially invited to Stockholm August 20-22, 2009.
This Conference is a joint venture between;
- The Scandinavian Association for Thoracic Surgery (SATS)
- The Scandinavian Society for Extracorporeal Technology (SCANSECT)
- The Scandinavian Association for Thoracic Nurses (SATNU)
- The Swedish Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery
- The Swedish Association for Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Intensive Care
- In addition physiotherapists working in the field of cardiothoracic surgery will meet for the first time to exchange experiences and to discuss the need for an organization of their own.
The format of the conference, including the social activities, provides an opportunity to meet experts and make new friends for future cooperation, development, and research.

Invited lectures
- Professor Gerald Buckberg, UCLA, will give the annual Clarence Crafoord lecture, which usually is arranged during the Swedish annual meeting. Professor Buckberg was the 2007 Recipient of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Scientific Achievement Award. He has published a large number of important articles in the fields of myocardial protection and left ventricular reconstruction.
- Associate professor Anelechi Anyanwu, Director of Heart and Heart-Lung Transplantation at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, will give a lecture on "How to read the surgical literature". His presentation might be considered as a follow-up to the very successful SATS postgraduate course in Copenhagen 2008, "From methodology to clinical evidence based decision making"
Scientific topics during the meeting
- "The Right Heart" with lectures and discussions on postoperative pulmonary hypertension, evaluation of right ventricular function, and indications for tricuspid valve surgery.
- "Transcatheter Valve Implantation" with a fresh update in this rapidly evolving field, which might change our everyday practice.
- "Cardiogenic Shock in Myocardial infarction" with lectures and discussions on indications and techniques for revascularization and mechanical support alternatives for these critically ill patients.
- "Humanitarian Work in Cardiac Surgery" with a presentation on the impact of cardiovascular disease and ongoing projects in cardiac surgery in less developed countries.
- During the SCANSECT sessions there will be a symposium on "Weaning from Long Term Mechanical Assist Support", a complicated and maybe controversial issue.
- During the SATNU and physiotherapists sessions there will be presentations on psychosocial effects of heart failure and waiting for heart surgery, ventilator associated pneumonia, pain control and respiratory function, as well as current guidelines and practices in chest physiotherapy.
- There will also be abstract sessions (both oral and posters) and we specifically invite our young colleagues, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and perfusionists to submit abstracts. We also welcome contributions from other health professionals, f.i. physiotherapists active in cardiothoracic surgery.
Social events include
- Stockholm is the site of the Nobel Prize celebrations and the first 600 registered participants will free of charge be invited to a buffet dinner and a guided tour of the City Hall, where also the magnificent Nobel dinner takes place.
- Thereafter, participants can discover Stockholm by joining a boat trip!
- The Gala Dinner will be held at Solliden Restaurant, with a fabulous view of the Stockholm waterfront. The restaurant is located at Skansen, which is the world's oldest open-air museum, founded in 1891.
We look forward to meet you in August, Stockholm's best time of the year!
